Thoughts and Slightly Strong Requests (Rules)
Thoughts and Slightly Strong Requests (Rules)
Very important – DRIVE SLOW(10 MPH) when coming into the property, through another ranch and our surrounding neighbors. We are in Hawai’i and you are not late.
There is often limited to no cell phone coverage in and around our house and route. Please print things out, learn celestial navigation, or read and remember our emails.
Hale Kumau (our home and ranch) runs 100% off rain water, so please conserve water at all times.
We recommend you bring sunscreen and other sun protection, as well as a light jacket/sweatshirt.
It may rain. I know it’s Hawai’i, and we have strong trade winds that blow all kinds of things our way for varied lengths of time.
It can be very windy. There are days where your thoughts are blown away faster than you can speak them (most often a good thing).
We are at 1700’ it gets chilly up here, I’m wearing a sweater now, bring one. We also have ranch sweaters available from our gift shop.
Do not wear high heels, just don't. It’ll be bad for you, it will be more importantly bad for your legs and shoes. This is an operating ranch, there is no pavement and few flat surfaces during your time up here.
You are more than welcome to drive to the ranch. There will be someone at the gate, your name will be on a list. Any issues the code word is ‘paniolo’ (if you are concerned you are not on the list please reach out )
Please see map above.
Signs will start along the mountain road between mile post 17 & 18 our turn off Puu Hue Road is between them. Follow the flying heart to the Ranch.
Basically, if you are coming from the south up highway 270 from Kawaihae (coast road) – take a Right in Hawi, another Right at the top of the hill (back towards Waimea on 250), then take a Right onto Pu’u Hue Road between milepost 18 and 17. From there follow the signs. If you are coming from Waimea on the Kohala Mountain Road, take a Left onto Pu’u Hue Road just after milepost 17.
If you are driving, GO SLOW especially on the gravel road approaching Hale Kumau. Seriously – slow is 10 mph – we live in the middle of an operating cattle ranch. We love our neighbors and they have free range animals including goats (and goats are intelligent only up to a certain point). Be careful of animals in the roadway.
Follow Pu’u Hue road across cattle guard onto gravel road. Stay Right and down the hill across a second cattle guard. Follow gravel road all the way through another gate the road ends at Hale Kumau.
